Migrating to Processor Sharing

چکیده

This paper describes experiences gained while adding processor sharing capabilities to the ARCADE distributed system. The goal of a processor sharing facility (PSF) is to allow busy users to take advantage of cycles available on idle processors, which are typically plentiful in a network of individually-owned machines. Several researchers have reported positive experiences with implementing a PSF in their own distributed systems. Encouraged by these reports, we embarked on a project to add this capability to ARCADE. Early on we realized that the original ARCADE architecture lacked some of the basic mechanisms required by a PSF. Thus, we needed to extend and modify ARCADE; this paper describes our experiences to date in doing so. In addition, we present some performance measurements and note lessons we have learned while making extensive changes to our architecture and prototype implementation.

Three-stage mining metals supply chain coordination and air pollutant emission reduction with revenue sharing contract

One of the main concerns of all industries such as mine industries is to increase their profit and keep their customers through improving quality level of their products; but increasing the quality of products usually releases air pollutants. Nowadays the management of air pollutant emissions with harmful environmental and health effects is one of the most pressing problems. In this paper, auth...

Group Management: An Approach to Processor Sharing for Cooperative Multi-task Applications

While peripheral sharing is now quite common in both commercial and experimental distributed systems, processor sharing is not. The goal of processor sharing is to allow busy users in a network to take advantage of the processing power of idle machines. Numerous experimental systems have demonstrated the usefulness of the concept, but actual use of processor sharing is still quite limited. This...

A note on \The Limited Performance Bene ts of Migrating Active Processes for Load Sharing"

The 1988 paper, \The Limited Performance Bene ts of Migrating Active Processes for Load Sharing," by Eager, Lazowska and Zahorjan concludes that migrating active processes for load balancing o ers little additional performance bene t beyond that obtained using only remote execution (placement). This result is based on analysis and simulation of a system model that is intended to overestimate th...

Scheduling Data-Parallel Computations on Heterogeneous and Time-Shared Environments

This paper addresses the problem of load balancing data{parallel computations on heterogeneous and time-shared parallel computing environments. Load imbalance in these environments may be introduced by the diierent capacities of processors populating a computer, or by the sharing of the same computational resources among several users. A evenly partitioned code, which on a homogeneous system ru...

Law of Large Number Limits of Limited Processor-Sharing Queues

Motivated by applications in computer and communication systems, we consider a processor sharing queue where the number of jobs served is not larger than K. We propose a measure-valued fluid model for this limited processor sharing queue and show that there exists a unique associated fluid model solution. In addition, we show that this fluid model arises as the limit of a sequence of appropriat...
